Read the how-to
The formula

How this number is built

net = gross − pre-tax deductions − FICA − federal tax − state tax − after-tax deductions
Step by step

Doing it by hand

Step 1

Start with gross annual salary before any deduction.

Step 2

Subtract pre-tax items: retirement, health premiums, HSA and FSA contributions.

Step 3

Apply Social Security up to the wage base and Medicare on everything.

Step 4

Apply the federal bracket schedule to income after the standard deduction.

Step 5

Add your state rate, then divide by pay frequency to get the figure on the payslip.

Questions

What people ask next

Why is my first paycheck of the year smaller?

Social Security tax applies until you reach the annual wage base, so high earners see take-home rise later in the year once it stops.

Does a raise ever reduce take-home?

Marginal brackets only tax the extra dollars at the higher rate, so a raise never reduces net pay. Losing an income-tested benefit is a different matter.
